Scrapbookers question

Hi all,

Now that I have a few scrapbookers dropping by (hopefully) semi regularly - I have a question for you all...

In recent years, more and more it seems the 'fashion' for scrapbooking has been leaning towards single page layouts...  Being the anal retent that I am - I just have not been able to bring myself around to the single page - preferring the 'balance' of looking at double pages...

I tend to scrap all (or at least most) of the photos I take (or certainly intend to - at some point!) there is nothing in 'other' album forms with plain photos for example...  I have also resisted (partly because of the double page OCD) the one photo to a layout trend (although it has happened where I have a lot of journalling on the 2nd page, or ephemera like invitations, tickets, etc) - even when I only have one photo of something I print it multiple times (usually in different sizes) to include...

Which way do you swing?  Or do you go both ways?  What determines which way you go with any particular layout?  Or does no one else agonise over this stuff like me..??

If you're a single page layout gal, how do you arrange your pages - do you worry about having similar papers or colours adjacent, or do you just pop things into the album in chronological (or some other order) not concerning yourself with the differences between each 'side'?

Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts!

  1. Interesting questions

    I usually scrap single page

some of my albums only have a layout on the right hand side of a double spread - so when looking through I only look at the one side of the doudle

Others I put them in chronologically with a layout on both sides of the double spread

I also often use a mix of page sizes in one album - especially if ther is a theme for the album, like my ONe Little Word album this year

I'm interested to see what others say

  2. I only make single pages, have never done a double spread yet! I just put them into my album as I make them, so not chronological.
I'm not too concerned about having similar pages together, although I do move things around sometimes if I think a new page goes well with a previous one. That all sounds very chaotic!

  3. I am still a newbie at actually making pages (not a newbie to collecting paper supplies or digi kits though!), so I might not be able to answer too well (but I will try!). At first I could never imagine making single pages and not have them match in an album, then I could never imagine double pages and having a "gap" in the middle. I also get totally freaked out when I see double pagers that look like you have to chop through a photo to make 2 pages!

So far, I have made photo books and like the pages to match. I have some digital 12 x 12's printed yet put them in an album randomly. I actually do think it comes down to personal preference; there really shouldn't be any way that is perceived as "wrong"!

  4. I never make double page layouts although I love to look at them when they are done by other scrappers. It's single page always for me and I don't worry about what is on the other page, I really like a mix and I even mix up my page protector sizes in my albums too.

  5. I do both single and double pages, but if I do two singles I try to keep them coordinating. And I always scrap chronologically. Very interesting question.

  6. I never do double pages anymore, however if the spirit moved me I would. I don't pay attention to what is the trend etc, I just make layouts the way I think the picture is meant to be scrapped. I don't know if that makes sense. I usually only do one photo but recently have been incorporating 2 or 3. It doesn't bother me what is next to what in my albums and I do layouts in all sizes :)

  7. I do a bit of both.....usually depending on what the photos suggest to me.
I do prefer 2 single pages next to each other to co-ordinate, but it doesn't always happen.
Depends on the theme whether it's chronological...in my kids albums it's chronological birth to 18......but in holiday albums I'm not worried whether they're in the right order or not.
In fact my scrapping is a total mish mash!!!!!

  8. I do single page layouts because they look best in online galleries. I have to share my work online, I'm addicted to that part of scrapbooking as much as everything else. I only have pages match when it's a mini-album with a theme. This is what makes me happy. There is a class at Big Picture Classes called Finding Your Way where the teacher helps you discover what you like to do best and embrace it. xoxo

  9. I do 99% single page layouts. It doesn't bother me to have different page styles/colors next to each other in an album. But my style is more about finding the one or two or three pictures for an event and scrapping them. I don't personally like a lot of pictures on my pages because then it's all about how to fit the pictures on the page and there is no room to do anything design wise. Page design is important to me, so that's why I lean that way. I also am taking the Finding Your Way class at BPC that Julie mentioned and it's excellent for looking at various elements of scrapbooking and design and figuring out what really clicks for you. Good luck!

  10. Thanks all for your comments (I've just read Shimelle's prompt about soliciting comments - maybe I'm psychic!!)...

I have just always wondered about this, and I do agonise a bit over it, especially when I'm looking for sketches or inspiration for my double page spreads - they're certainly few and far between. There are few sketches or scrap lifts that I take inspiration from that I haven't had to stretch and mould in some way to fit my double page obsession!

I've really enjoyed reading not just which format you choose, but why you've chosen it too. Thanks again.

  11. Unless it is the first or last page in an album I always do a double spread. Given how much pages cost, why would I waste a side !!!
If you want to see some awesome pages have a look a friend of mines blog. She puts up almost all her work, and it is very inspiring.

  12. When I first started scrapbooking, I only ever did double page layouts and many of the classes I used to do at my LSS did only double page layouts. These days I am a pure single page scrapbooker. I also don't scrap chronologically, they go in an album as I complete them. I love that you can get different sized page protectors as it means I can switch up sizes as I go as well. Cheers!

  13. I'm another scrapper who mixes page sizes in albums, and puts them in in the order of completion, not chronology. I like the look of double pages, and have done a few, but all that white space can be overwhelming to me.

  14. hmmm - mine are completely mixed and muddled. I love double page layouts for the number of photos I can fit on a page and still have some white space left...but I make loads of single pages too. My albums don't match up at all.
And in answer to Julie Ann - I agree that double LOs don't tend to look as good in online galleries - and that was bugging me - but I've just managed to change my blog template to show off double layouts better so I think that'll do me for now:)

  15. I scrap single pages, almost always 12 x 12, and don't worry about pages in the album matching up. They seem to all look fine together in the end without my trying to force the issue.
